Macro-level economic and environmental sustainability of negative emission technologies; Case study of crushed silicate production for enhanced weathering

Enhanced weathering (EW) involves application of crushed silicate rocks on croplands to capture CO 2 . Although research EW is gaining traction, the missing elements in literature however are supply chain sustainability impacts associated with large-scale production and deployment silicates for purposes. The need conduct assessments systems addition validated technical feasibility remains a relevant gap. In this work, potential economic environmental assessed eight countries, belonging two separate groups: emerging economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China) developed (USA, UK, France, Germany). A total six impact categories included assessment; gross domestic product (GDP), operating surplus (GOS), imports, greenhouse gas emissions, energy, material use. input-output model used estimate economy-wide macro-level derived from producing silicates. Findings show have relatively high levels positive benefits may experience less negative within their national boundaries by ‘leaking’ such via imports. Imported consumption countries were found be substantially higher than that economies. For economies, imported constitutes average, 10% whereas averages 20%. UK mining quarrying sector has highest at approximately 30%. results study provide insightful outlook into opportunities challenges surrounding important informing both global policy decisions regarding technique. • Developed silicate.
